Strong Second Half Leads to 73-57 win over No. 25 Lawrence Tech

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (December 29, 2019)
– After scoring just 22 points in the first half, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (10-1) posted 22 points in the third quarter and 29 points in the fourth to secure a 73-57 win over the No. 25-ranked Lawrence Tech Blue Devils (10-5) on Sunday afternoon.

The Wildcats shot 61.3 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes of action (19-of-31) for 51 points while holding the Blue Devils to just 29 points on 10-of-30 shooting (33.3 percent). The second half saw JWU hold statistical advantages in points in the paint (26-6), points off turnovers (12-6), second chance points (12-0), fast break points (9-3), and bench scoring (13-2).  

Three Wildcats reached double-figures in scoring led by junior Tianna Ayulo, who contributed 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor. The native of Hollywood, Florida, also led JWU in rebounding (9) and assists (8). Junior Alexis McClain added 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting with a game-high three blocked shots. Freshman Shykim Gillion posted 12 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the floor and 6-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. She also collected seven rebounds.

JWU ended the afternoon, shooting 43.5 percent from the floor (27-of-62) and was 3-of-10 from 3-point range (30.0 percent). Lawrence Tech converted 21-of-63 of its shots from the floor (33.3 percent) and shot 36.0 percent from long range (9-of-25).

The win marked the team's 10th victory of the season as the 2019-20 squad becomes the first team in program history to reach the 10-win plateau before the start of the New Year (through October, November, December).

The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, December 31, hosting Taylor University. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
