NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (February 13, 2020) – Winning its school record 16th game of the season and program-best 10th conference game of the year, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (16-6, 10-4 TSC) completed the season sweep of the Ave Maria Gyrenes (15-11, 8-8 TSC), 76-63, on Thursday evening.
Three Wildcats reached double-figures in scoring led by junior Tianna Ayulo, who scored a game-high 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor. The native of Hollywood, Florida, was also 5-of-9 from 3-point range and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Ayulo grabbed six rebounds in the game to go along with three assists and two steals.
Freshman Shikal Gillion added 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line. The native of Delray Beach, Florida, led JWU with seven assists and four steals versus the Gyrenes.
Also scoring in double-figures was junior Chrystal Pressley, who registered 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The native of Miramar, Florida, grabbed a team-best 15 rebounds for the first double-double of her JWU career.
Trailing at the half, 36-32, JWU used a strong third and fourth quarter to come away with their 10th Sun Conference win of the season. The Wildcats out-scored the Gyrenes, 45-27 in the final 20 minutes of action.
JWU ended the game shooting 42.4 percent from the floor (28-of-66) and was 9-of-26 from 3-point range (34.6 percent). The Gyrenes shot 24-of-50 from the floor (48.0 percent) and converted 22.2 percent from downtown (2-of-9).
AMU held a slight edge in rebounding, 37-36, despite JWU holding an 18-12 edge on the offensive glass.
The Wildcats will travel to Lakeland, Florida, to take on Southeastern on Saturday, February 15. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
