JWU Closes Out Regular Season with a 60-49 Win at Florida Memorial

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 22, 2020)
– Out-scoring the Lions 22-8 in the fourth quarter, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (19-7, 13-5 TSC) defeated the Florida Memorial Lions (13-15, 8-10 TSC), 60-49, on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats were led by juniors Tianna Ayulo (16 points) and Alexis McClain (15 points), who combined for 31 of JWU 60 total points. Ayulo shot 6-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. The native of Hollywood, Florida, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished out a team-best six assists. McClain converted 6-of-13 from the field and was 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. The product of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, recorded seven rebounds and a team-high two blocked shots.

After falling behind 16-10 in the first quarter, JWU held the Lions to just eight points to head into halftime with a 24-26 lead. Again FMU jumped out to a 51-48 edge after three stanzas, but the Wildcats again held the Lions to just eight points in the final 10 minutes to come away with the 11-point victory.

JWU ended the contest shooting 35.5 percent from the floor (22-of-62) and was 4-of-14 from 3-point range (28.6 percent). FMU made 18-of-58 attempts from the field (31.0 percent) and converted 28.6 percent from beyond the arc (4-of-14). The Wildcats were out-rebounded 49-36, but used 22 FMU turnovers to hold the Lion under 50 points.

The Wildcats will turn their attention to the 2020 Sun Conference Women's Basketball Championships beginning Tuesday, February 25. As the No. 3 seed in this year's tournament, JWU will play host to Ave Maria in the quarterfinals. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
