Wildcats Advance to Sun Conference Semifinals with 73-61 Win over Ave Maria

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (February 25, 2020)
– For the first time in school history the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's basketball team (20-7) reached the 20-win plateau with a 73-61 win over Ave Maria (15-14) in the Sun Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday.

With the win, JWU advances to the TSC Semifinals for just the second time in program history to face the Coastal Georgia Mariners on Friday.

Junior Tianna Ayulo led all Wildcats with a game-high 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. The 20-point outing was the 11th of the season for the native of Hollywood, Florida. Ayulo grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished out a game-high seven assists versus the Gyrenes.

Also scoring in double-figures were freshman sisters Shikal (16) and Shykim (10) Gillion. Shikal shot 7-of-15 from the floor while Shykim went 4-of-11 form the floor. Both added two points form the charity stripe.  

Junior Chrystal Pressley recorded seven boards, including four on the offensive glass as the Wildcats held a 17-10 edge on the offensive boards.

JWU ended the game shooting 42.2 percent from the floor (27-of-64) and converted 2-of-12 attempts from 3-point range (16.7 percent). AMU went 22-of-51 from the floor (43.1 percent) and shot 25.0 percent from downtown (4-of-16).

JWU held a 25-5 edge in fast break points and forced 19 Gyrene turnovers, resulting in 21 points for the Wildcats.

The No. 3 seeded Wildcats will take on the No. 2-seeded Mariners on Friday, February 28. Game time from the Furnace in Lakeland, Florida, is set for 1:00 p.m.
