JWU Women's Soccer

The Wildcats enter Saturday's action with a 5-1-0 record following a 4-0 win over Ave Maria last Saturday.

A strong defensive effort by the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's soccer team (5-1-0) guided the Wildcats to a 4-0 win over the Ave Maria Gyrenes (1-6-0).

With very few chances allowed in the JWU third of the field, AMU was held to just five shot on net as the Wildcats notched their second clean sheet over the past seven days. That stifling defensive play by starters and reserves (Adelyn Claborn, Brianna Pineiro, Ashlyn Hannus, Lizzy Madril, Fiona Butler, Isabela Fernandez to name a few) both on the backline and in the defensive midfield created offensive chances for the Wildcats throughout the contest.

JWU's first score came on such a transition as Pineiro started a counter after shutting down a Gyrene attack. The native of Coconut Creek, Florida, slotted a pass to Sawyer Hall, who in turn found Savannah Jackson at the edge of the 18. Jackson, currently the nation's leading scorer, tallied her first score of the game of off Hall's pass in the ninth minute. The goal was the 20th of the season for Jackson while the assists were the third and second of the year for Hall and Pineiro, respectively. The goal, which was the eventual game-winner, was Jackson's fifth game-winning goal of the season and 19th of her JWU career.

Defense once again set up a score for the Wildcats in the 16th minute as Madril created a counter-attack, shutting down an AMU threat in the middle third. The native of Navarre, Florida, switched the field sending a pass to Brazil Clark on the right side of the pitch. Clark streaked the down the side of the field and crossed a pass into the area where Andrea Gomez buried a shot for her first goal as a Wildcat. The score gave JWU a 2-0 advantage and resulted in Clark's fourth assist on the year and the third of the season for Madril.

Jackson netted her second goal of the game in the 39th minute as JWU made the score 3-0. For the third time in the game, defense created the scoring chance as Mariah Zayas forced a turnover in JWU's third of the field, creating another counter after a brief give-and-go with Jasmine Blindt. Zayas then chipped a pass over the Gyrene backline, which Jackson ran onto and beat the goalkeeper for the 22nd multiple-goal game of her career. Zayas was credited with her second assist of the year on the score while Blindt notched her third.

The Wildcats extended their lead in the 83rd minute with Jackson's third goal of the game. The play was set up after Pineiro intercepted a pass at the edge of the AMU area following a Gyrene defender's attempt to clear the ball out of danger. Pineiro found Jackson her sixth hat trick of the season and 10th of her career. The assist was Pineiro's third of the season and second of the game.

Freshman Denise Mendoza (5-1-0) picked up her second shutout victory of the season, registering five saves versus the Gyrenes.

The Wildcats ended the afternoon out-shooting the Gyrenes, 19-12, including 11-5 on net.
