MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (October 2, 2019) – A 76th-minute strike by junior Savannah Jackson was all that the Wildcats needed as the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) women's soccer team (7-1-0, 2-0-0 TSC) won its third-straight match with a 1-0 win over the St. Thomas Bobcats (4-3-0, 2-1-0 TSC) on Wednesday afternoon.
Jackson notched her nation-leading 23rd goal of the season with a score in the 76th minute. Junior Andrea Gomez chipped the ball past the Bobcats backline, which Jackson corralled. The native of Winter Haven, Florida, then blasted a shot past STU goalkeeper Melanie Lefebvre to get JWU on the board. The assist for Gomez was the first of her JWU career.
Despite allowing 31 total shots, the Wildcats held St. Thomas in check as most of the Bobcat's shots we away from the area, resulting in either high or wide attempts.
Of the attempts that were on net, JWU goalkeeper Denise Mendoza recorded seven saves on the afternoon, giving the native of Hialeah, Florida, her third-straight shutout and fourth clean sheet of the season.
The win marked the second-straight victory for the Wildcats over the Bobcats, improving JWU to 2-10 all-time versus St. Thomas. It also improved the Wildcats to 2-0-0 in conference play; the best start in conference action since the 2013 season (2-0-0).
The Wildcats will hit the road to take on No. 4 Southeastern on Saturday, October 5. Game time from Lakeland, Florida, is set for 3:00 p.m.
