BABSON PARK, Fla. (Sept. 8, 2018) – The Johnson & Wales volleyball team (4-5, 0-1 TSC) fell in its Sun Conference opener to Webber International (7-3, 1-0 TSC), 3-1 (25-12, 17-25, 25-14, 25-18), in Babson Park, Florida, on Saturday afternoon.
Falling behind, 25-12, in the first set, the Wildcats rebounded with a 25-17 win in set two to draw the match even at 1-1. JWU forced 10 attack errors to bring the contest level at 1-all. However, the Warriors outhit the Wildcats .300 to -.031 in set three for a 2-1 lead and .222 to .108 in set four to close out the match 3-1.
Sophomore Savannah Swenson led all Wildcats with 11 kills in the match. The Clermont, Florida native also registered 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Bianca Torres recorded a team-best 17 digs, tying her season-best set on August 31 versus Truett-McConnell. Freshman Vanessa Orozco tallied a team-high 12 assists followed by sophomore Anissa Giammona, who had nine.
The Wildcats finished the match hitting .055 in the match while WIU tallied a clip of .193. JWU produced six service aces, four of which were registered by junior Sharell Nairn. Sophomore Alexis McClain recorded four total blocks (two solo, two assisted) as JWU claimed five total team blocks in the match.
The Wildcats will return to action with a trip to Miami Gardens, Florida, to take on St. Thomas on Wednesday, September 12. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
