NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Sept. 11, 2018) – The Johnson & Wales volleyball team (4-5, 0-1 TSC) continues conference action on Wednesday with a trip to Miami Gardens, Florida, to take on St. Thomas (1-7, 0-1 TSC). Game time from the Fernandez Family Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
The Wildcats are coming off a 3-1 loss at Webber International on Saturday. Sophomore Savannah Swenson led all Wildcats with 11 kills in the match. The Clermont, Florida native also registered 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Bianca Torres recorded a team-best 17 digs, tying her season-best set on August 31 versus Truett-McConnell. Freshman Vanessa Orozco tallied a team-high 12 assists followed by sophomore Anissa Giammona, who had nine.
JWU comes into Wednesday's contest averaging 10.57 kills-per-set with a team hitting percentage of .163 (No. 5 in the conference). The Wildcats are also averaging 12.14 digs-per-set and have totaled 83 service aces (No. 42 in the nation and No. 2 in the conference) and 53 total blocks. The Wildcats are averaging 1.51 blocks-per-set good for No. 3 in the conference.
Swenson leads all Wildcats with 101 kills, averaging 2.89 kills-per-set (No. 4 in the conference) while hitting at a clip of .208. The second-year Wildcat also leads the team in total digs 96, averaging 2.74 digs-per-set. Her 20 total service aces are the second-most in the conference and rank No. 44 in the nation. Junior Sierra Mooney is second on the team in total kills (88), averaging 2.51 kills-per-set. The native of Middleburg, Florida, leads JWU with a hitting percentage of .318 (No. 2 in the conference). Mooney also leads the team in total blocks with 23, averaging 0.67 blocks-per-set (No. 7 in the conference). Orozco leads JWU with 208 total assists (No. 5 in the conference), averaging 5.94 assists-per-set (No. 4 in the conference).
Series History: Wednesday will mark the fifth meeting all-time between JWU and St. Thomas with the Bobcats holding a 4-0 advantage in the series history. The last meeting between the two schools resulted in a 3-0 win for STU on November 1, 2017, in Miami Gardens, Florida.
