Wildcats Suffer 3-2 Loss at St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Sept. 12, 2018)
– The Johnson & Wales volleyball team (4-6, 0-2 TSC) suffered a 3-2 (19-25, 25-11, 20-25, 25-18, 15-4), loss to Sun Conference foe St. Thomas (2-7, 1-1 TSC) in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 win in the first set. JWU hit .242 with 11 total kills while STU totaled 10 kills on a hitting percentage of .091. The Bobcats tied the match in the second set with a 25-11 win as the Wildcats committed 10 hitting errors. JWU rebounded in set three with a 25-20 win as the Wildcats took a 2-1 advantage. However, St. Thomas responded with a 25-18 victory in set four and a 15-4 win in set five to take the match, 3-2.

Junior Sierra Mooney led all Wildcats with 10 kills. Junior Sharell Nairn followed closely behind Mooney with nine kills. The Miami product notched a team-best 17 digs. Sophomores Savannah Swenson and Bianca Torres also reached double-figures in digs with 16 and 14, respectively. Freshman Vanessa Orozco and sophomore Anissa Giammona registered 15 assists each to pace the Wildcats. 

For the match, JWU recorded a hitting percentage of .076 while STU posted a clip of .243. The Bobcats held a 71-62 edge in digs and notched 9.0 team blocks to just 2.0 for JWU. The Wildcats recorded 10 service aces led by Torres' five.

The Wildcats travel to New Port Richey, Florida, to take on the Trinity Tigers on Thursday, September 13. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
