Volleyball Drops Tightly-Contested 3-0 Decision to Florida National

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2018)
– The Johnson & Wales volleyball team (8-14) dropped a tightly-contested 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-16) decision to the Florida National Conquistadors on Wednesday evening from the Wildcat Center.

The match started with a back-and-forth set number one that saw seven lead change and 12 tied scores. The Wildcats hit .205 in the frame and were led by junior Sierra Mooney's four kills. However, four service errors ultimately led to a 26-24 loss and a 1-0 advantage for FNU.

Set two pitted JWU's .333 hitting percentage to the Conquistador's .343. Junior Vitoria Nicolau hit .500 in the frame with five kills and no hitting errors. Sophomore Savannah Swenson led the Wildcats with six total kills in set two, however, FNU pulled out the 26-24 win to take a 2-0 lead.

In set three, FNU hit .324 while JWU registered an attack percentage of .086. Twelve kills (with no hitting errors) and two team blocks resulted in a 25-16 win for the Conquistadors in set three as the Wildcats fell, 3-0.

Swenson ended the night with a team-high 11 kills followed by Nicolau, who notched 10. The native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, hit a match-high .455 and also collected 10 digs for the first double-double of her JWU career. Freshman Vanessa Orozco recorded a team-high 31 assists versus FNU and also notched 10 digs for her team-leading 10th double-double of 2018. Sophomore Bianca Torres finished the night with a match-high 19 digs to increase her season total to 277.

The Wildcats ended the night hitting .209 while FNU hit at a clip of .257. The Conquistadors held a 6.0-2.0 edge in total team blocks while the Wildcats held a 56-50 edge in total digs.

JWU will return to Sun Conference action, traveling to Lake Wales, Florida, to face Warner University on Saturday, October 13. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
