Wildcats Push Conquistadors to Five Sets; Fall 3-2

– Three Wildcats reached double-figures in kills in a five-set slugfest versus the Florida National (14-14), falling to the Conquistadors, 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 25-18, 22-25, 22-20), on Wednesday evening.

Johnson & Wales (Fla) (8-18) was led by sophomore Savannah Swenson, who posted a team-high 14 kills and also collected a team-best 18 digs for her sixth double-double of the year. Joining Swenson in double-digit kills were juniors Vitoria Nicolau (13) and Sierra Mooney (10). Nicolau recorded her second double-double of 2018 registering 13 digs while Mooney added two more blocks to her single-season, school-record for total blocks (63).

Defensively, JWU had five Wildcats with 10-or-more digs versus the Conquistadors. Along with Swenson (18), and Nicolau (13), sophomore Bianca Torres posted 17, freshman Vanessa Orozco had 16 and freshman Jazmine Richardson recorded 16. Orozco led JWU with 33 assists en route to her team-leading 12th double-double this season.

JWU opened the match with a 25-20 set-one victory. Swenson led the Wildcats with five kills in the set to give JWU a 1-0 lead. FNU responded with a 25-15 win in set two to tie the match, 1-1. The Conquistadors extended their lead, 2-1, following a 25-18 victory in set three. The Wildcats countered with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. Nicolau's five kills helped tie the match up and send it to a decisive fifth set. The final set saw four lead changes and 12 tie scores but ultimately went the way of FNU, 22-20.

For the match, JWU registered a .071 hitting percentage while FNU hit at a clip of .142. The Wildcats held a 47-46 edge in total kills while the Conquistadors held an advantage in total digs 93-90.

The Wildcats will return home to host the Johnson University Suns on Friday, October 25. Game times is set for 4:00 p.m.
