HIALEAH, Fla. (Aug. 23, 2019) – The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) volleyball team (1-0) opened its 2019 season with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23) win over Edward Waters (0-1) on Friday evening from Bucky Dent Gymnasium in Hialeah, Florida.
Three Wildcats reached double-digits in kills, including senior Sharell Nairn, who posted a game-high 17. The native of Miami also registered a game-high five service aces. Senior Vitoria Nicolau notched her first double-double of the season recording 11 kills and 16 digs versus the Tigers. Senior Sierra Mooney rounded out the top attackers for the Wildcats, tallying 10 kills with a .269 hitting percentage.
Setter Vanessa Orozco notched 33 assists while collecting 15 digs for the 13th double-double of her JWU career. Junior Bianca Torres posted 12 digs to increase her school-record career total to 813.
The Wildcats took set one, in a tightly-contested opening frame, 25-22. EWC looked to tie the match after jumping out to a 20-13 lead in set two. However, JWU battled back to take set two, 25-23. The Tigers got on the board in set number three, winning 25-23. Once again, EWC tried to draw even with the Wildcats in the fourth set. Go back-and-forth, neither team could take a decisive lead. An attack error by Nairn drew the contest even a 23-all but, the fourth-year Wildcat rebounded with consecutive kills to put the match away.
JWU finished the match with a .133 hitting percentage while the Tigers hit .115 in the contest. The Wildcats registered 12 service aces in the match and forced EWC to commit 28 attack errors.
The Wildcats will return to the court on Saturday, August 24, to take on Edward Waters again from Bucky Dent Gymnasium. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
