HIALEAH, Fla. (August 24, 2019) – The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) volleyball team (2-0) earned its second-straight win with a 3-2 (25-16, 20-25, 25-7, 17-25, 15-6) win over the Edward Waters Tigers (0-3) on Saturday afternoon from the Bucky Dent Gymnasium in Hialeah, Florida.
Career highs by seniors Sharell Nairn and Vitoria Nicolau guided the Wildcats their third-consecutive win over EWC and second-straight in as many days. Nairn, who notched 17 kills with a team-leading .310 hitting percentage, tallied a career-high 27 digs for the ninth double-double of her career. Nicolau registered a career-best 15 kills while recording an attack percentage of .255 versus the Tigers.
Setter Vanessa Orozco posted a season-high 45 assists and collected 10 digs for her second-straight double-double. The native of Kissimmee, Florida, became just the second player in JWU history to reach the 700-assist plateau, finishing the match with 736 career assists. Junior Bianca Torres, the school's all-time leader in digs, added to her total with 24 on Saturday (837 career).
For the second-straight day, the Wildcats recorded 12 aces led by freshman Desiree Birriel, who tallied six.
JWU opened the afternoon with a set-one victory, 25-16, recording 13 kills on 43 total attacks. The Tigers evened the match, taking set two, 25-20. JWU made a statement in the third set, hammering EWC, 25-7, to take a 2-1 lead. During the set, the Wildcats rattled off 12-straight points to take a 17-3 lead. The sting of points was highlighted by a serving clinic put on by Birriel, who served for 12-straight points while recording six aces.
The Tigers responded by tying the match, 2-2, after winning the fourth set, 25-17. JWU took care of business in the fifth set, beating EWC, 15-6, and taking the match 3-2.
JWU finished the afternoon with a .218 hitting percentage, recording 58 total kills. The Wildcats also produced 98 digs while holding the Tigers to a .090 hitting percentage.
JWU will travel to Dayton, Tennessee, to take part in 2019 Bryan Bash Tournament hosted by Bryan College. The Wildcats will take on Bryan College on Friday, August 30, beginning at noon.
