JWU Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match at Florida National

HIALEAH, Fla. (September 11, 2019)
– The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) volleyball team (2-4) fell to the Florida National Conquistadors (8-5), 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-11), on Wednesday evening from Bucky Dent Gym in Hialeah, Florida.

Seniors Sharell Nairn and Vitoria Nicolau led the Wildcats offensively, recording 16 and 10 kills, respectively. Nairn also posted 17 digs for her third double-double of the season while Nicolau notched a career-high 25 digs to tally her second double-double of 2019. Junior Bianca Torres ended the night with a team-high-tying 25 digs to become the first Wildcat this season to break the 100-dig mark. Sophomore Vanessa Orozco posted a match-high 25 assist and recorded 14 digs for her team-leading fourth double-double of the year.

FNU jumped out to a 1-0 lead following a 25-20 first-set victory. The Wildcats responded, taking set two, 25-20, to even the match (1-1). The Conquistadors re-took the lead with a 25-17 victory in set three but, JWU drew even once again, winning the fourth frame 25-20. The fifth set was tightly-contested, going-back-and-forth. However, FNU edged JWU, 15-11, for the 3-2 win.

The Wildcats ended the night with an attack percentage of .084 recording 40 total kills on 178 total attacks with 25 errors. FNU registered a .150 hitting percentage, recording 54 total kills on 180 attacks with 27 errors. The Conquistadors held a 107-94 edge in digs.

JWU will return to action on Saturday, September 14, versus the Webber International Warriors in the Wildcat's Sun Conference opener. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
