Wildcats Drop Conference Opener to Webber, 3-1

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (September 14, 2019)
– The Johnson & Wales (Fla.) volleyball team (2-5, 0-1 TSC) dropped its Sun Conference opener to Webber International (4-4, 1-1 TSC), 3-1 (25-13, 17-25, 28-26, 25-21), on Saturday afternoon from the Wildcat Center.

JWU was led by senior Vitoria Nicolau, who registered a career-high 19 kills with a team-high .326 attack percentage. The native Sao Paolo, Brazil, also collected 16 digs for her third double-double of the year. Senior Sierra Mooney reached double-digits in kills, posting 10 versus the Warriors. Sophomore Vanessa Orozco notched 34 assists to increase her career total to 829. Senior Sharell Nairn led JWU with a game-high 21 digs and was one of four Wildcats to reach double-digits in digs versus WIU (Nicolau – 16, Bianca Torres – 12, Desiree Birriel – 12).

WIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking set one, 25-13. The Wildcats rebounded from a poor-hitting first set (.040) and won the second set 25-17 to knot the match up a 1-1. Set three was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Warriors edge the Wildcats, 28-26, for the 2-1 lead. Unable to draw even again, JWU dropped the fourth set (25-21) and the match (3-1) for the team's first conference loss of the season.

JWU ended the afternoon with 42 kills on 151 total attacks with 23 errors and a .126 hitting percentage. The Warriors recorded 58 kills and 22 errors on 164 total attacks for an attack percentage of .220. WIU held a slight edge in total digs, 79-78, and a 4.0-3.0 advantage in total team blocks.

The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, September 18, when they take on Sun Conference foe Florida Memorial. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.
