Wildcats Sweep Conquistadors, 3-0; Torres Reaches 1,000-Dig Milestone

HIALEAH, Fla. (October 1, 2019)
– Led offensively by seniors Vitoria Nicolau and Sharell Nairn, the Johnson & Wales (Fla.) volleyball team (4-9) downed the Florida National Conquistadors (9-8) in straight-sets, 3-0 (25-23, 29-27, 25-21) on Tuesday evening.

The win marked the first for the Wildcats over the Conquistadors in program history (1-9 all-time) while junior Bianca Torres hit a personal milestone, recording the 1,000th dig of her career during the match. The native of Miami, Florida, registered 11 in the contest to push her career total to 1,007, becoming the first Wildcat in JWU volleyball history to register 1,000 digs.

Nicolau led JWU with 15 kills on an attack percentage of .250 (40 total attempts and five errors). Tuesday marked the fourth match of the season in which the native of Sao Paolo, Brazil notched 15-or-more kills in a match.

Nairn, the school's all-time leader in kills (812), tallied 14 versus FNU with a hitting percentage of .225. The native of Miami, Florida, also corralled 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Playing in the 100th match of her JWU career, Nairn recorded 16.0 points in the match to up her career total to 983.5.

Sophomore Vanessa Orozco notched 28 assists and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of 2019. Also registering double-digit digs was freshman Desiree Birriel who had 12.

The Wildcats finished the match with 33 kills and 18 attack errors on 102 total attempts for an attack percentage of .147. FNU registered 38 kills with 19 errors on 119 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .160. The Wildcats held a 55-48 edge in total digs and had nine service aces to five for the Conquistadors.

JWU will return home to host the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Wednesday, October 2. Game time from the Wildcat Center is 7:00 p.m.
