TAMPA, Fla. (October 14, 2019) – Senior Sharell Nairn and sophomore Vanessa Orozco earned Sun Conference Player of the Week honors for the week ending October 13 the league announced on Monday.
Nairn was named this week's Attacker of the Week while Orozco garnered Setter of the Week recognition.
Nairn ended the week with 73 kills, averaging 6.64 kills-per-set with a hitting percentage of .280 as JWU picked up two conference wins. The native of Miami, Florida, also recorded 37 digs (3.36 dps), five total blocks, and four service aces. Nairn began the week recording a career-high and school-record 30 kills in a 3-1 win at Warner. Nairn also collected 16 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. After posting 13 kills versus Florida National on Friday, Nairn tied her school record, posting 30 kills as JWU swept the season series with the Royals and picked up the program's first conference home win. She also recorded 16 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. On the year, Nairn has recorded 282 kills (No. 1 in the conference and No. 39 in the nation), averaging 4.27 kills-per-set (No. 1 in the conference and No. 7 in the nation) and leads the conference with 325.0 total points, averaging 4.92 points-per-set.
The weekly award is the second of Nairn's career.
Orozco ended this past week with 120 assists, averaging 10.91 assist-per-set as JWU picked up two conference wins. The native of Kissimmee, Florida, also posted 31 digs (2.82 dps). Orozco began the week, recording a match-high 46 assists versus Warner and registering 15 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. After recording 13 assists versus Florida National on Friday, Orozco set the school record for assists, producing 55 to complete the season sweep of the Royals and giving JWU its first home conference win program history. Orozco also produced 13 digs for her eighth double-double this year. On the year, Orozco has totaled 475 assists (No. 3 in the conference), averaging 7.31 assists-per-set (No. 3 in the conference).
The weekly award is the first of Orozco's career.
